Cassie Abernethy

VitaStile is highly recommending this must see film. Why?  Our very own Cassie Abernethy was chosen through Paul Mitchell to be on the hair intern design team on set last July.  Cassie gave her blood, sweat and tears from July 6^th until Sept 30^th creating wigs and hairpieces.   She assisted with many of the extra actors’ and actresses’ complete looks, organizing them and assisting at all times. Cassie was to maintain the hairpieces along with keeping the extras looking fresh and ready to go when called for filming.

Cassie had the honor of working hand in hand with Linda Flowers.  Linda is a Lead Stylist in LA and also the inventor of the Topstyler and the Instyler hair tools.  She worked with Cherry Barber- Petenbrink,  a guest artist/color  trainer for  Joico.  Joe Matke, a LA Stylist who won a Oscar for the popular tv daytime drama All My Children, as well.  She also accompanied V. Neil, LA’s hottest make-up artist, who has done make-up events all over the world.

The film was shot in two locations. Lions Gate filmed in Phillip Morris Plantation, and in Concord, NC and in the heart of the city of Charlotte.  This is where she worked very long and strenuous hours under very strict instruction, as to no cell phones, pictures, or conversation about the film.  She was away from her work, her family and friends and although missing them terribly it was a once in a life time opportunity, or so she thought.  Cassie has been called once again this coming fall to join the Hunger Games crew and start working on the looks for The Hunger Games 2.   Although she will be missed in the salon, we are really proud of her, and support her 100%.  And, thankfully for her guests, she will be able to work in the salon twice a week this time around.

Cassie  loves film work and is hoping this is just the second to many adventures in this industry, Cassie stated that, “working on set with such amazing people is a thrill of a lifetime. We work so close so hard and have to be such a strong team, you become family when it’s said and done.”

Cassie is an amazing artist with hair. To appreciate her talent and truly be made beautiful, you must not only see the movie, and her name in the credentials,  you must sit in her chair and get to enjoy her talent and the beautiful person she is.

Ponytails

Ponytails are not just for casual looks. They were seen at some of the biggest name shows. Many pony tail looks were curly or wavy. Looped tails and twists were featured on the runways of Carolina Herrera and Derek Lam, among others. We love pony tails because they’re an achievable look for everyone.

Sleek Looks

Based on this year’s Fashion Week shows, it looks like sleek, shiny looks will be a big trend. Slicked back with sharp lines is the look of the runway. But real life looks don’t have to be harsh. Slicking hair back too tightly can be aging and doesn’t look natural. We take the looks of the runway as inspiration to create a style that’s current and perfect for your lifestyle.

Mixed Textures

Texture was seen at the Ecco Domani runway show and others. This year’s styles will incorporate a mix of textures, bringing in mixes of curly and sleek or teased with straight. Square Bob

The bob is a classic that never goes out of style. It works for almost any face shape. This year the bob will take on more of a square shape that is slightly rounded toward the front. Here’s one example, but each cut will be unique based on the length and texture of hair, as well as the client’s personality.

Twisted Hair

Last year was all about the braid. Consider 2012 the year of the twist. Twisted hair was seen all over the runways during fashion week, so it’s likely we’ll see them in everyday street styles as well. The possibilities for wearing twists are endless. They’re great for casual daily wear and for formal events. Plus, they’re easier to do than  most braided styles. They can also be incorporated into both long and shorter hair.

Notice Me Bangs

Forget wispy or piece-y. This year’s bangs will be bold and noticeable. Think Zooey Deschanel. This year’s bangs will be blunt and will draw attention to beautiful eyes and cheek bones. Smooth, Undone Waves

Unlike last year’s beachy waves, we’ll be seeing more bendy type waves this year. Not perfect, round waves, but ones that look natural and start toward the middle of the hair shaft. This new wavy look works best on middle to longer length hair. You can get these smooth wavy locks yourself. Just prep with mousse on damp hair, flip hair to blow dry and dry with a round brush. Finally, curl only from the middle to the ends of hair. Voila!

How long have you been doing hair, and how did you get into it?

I’ve worked in a salon for 10 1/2 years but I have been licensed for 9 years. I got into it because of my cousin, Jackie. She opened a salon my senior year of high school and i played basketball so she was willing to work will my schedule. I began assisting her and fell in love with the atmosphere, so i went to beauty school.

Have you always been with VitaStile?

No I worked for my cousin for 6 years and for another salon for 2 1/2 years and have now been at Vitastile for 2 years.

You also are an educator for L’Oreal. Tell us about that? What kinds of people do you teach and at what sorts of salons?

My position is called an LSEC. It stands for L’Oreal Sales and Education Coordinator. My position is to manage the education for all L’oreal Professionnel elite salons in Western PA.  At the beginning of the year I have a meeting with the salon owner and set up their educational plans for the entire year. Their purchases determine what education they get. Salons get training from local educators including myself, as well as Portfolio Artists from all over the United States. L’Oreal Professionnel is all about education, so even salons that don’t meet an elite level can have some in salon training or attend local events such as the L’Oreal Professionnel Masters Program that I teach in Cranberry.  I also manage and train the other local educators.  I teach stylists ranging from beauty school to stylists that have been in the industry for over 40 years.

I know you also have a lot going on in your personal life. Aren’t you planning a wedding?

Yes!! I got married on October 1. It was amazing!! Lots of planning (which was hard w/ only 1 day off) but well worth it! We followed that with a honeymoon to Cancun   We also have a new addition to our family…our new puppy, Roxy   so i have a newborn too!

How do you keep up with it all? Any advice?

Well, I have my moments when I feel like i’m taking on too much, but I love what I do. I am a VERY organized person..I think I have OCD with organization :)  So that’s what really helps me keep up with it all and I have a very supportive husband that helps out tremendously around the house!!   I educate Monday through Wednesday and give 100% to that those 3 days, and I work in the salon Thursday through Saturday and give 100% to my clients those days. I try to keep them separate so I divide my time fairly. They do work hand-in-hand though because educating helps me and Vitastile stay current with the latest trends for our clients.  I’d rather do it all now while i’m young and able

My advice is to always make time for yourself and for family.   Work to live..don’t live to work.   And most importantly to trust God because he won’t give you more than you can handle. Anytime I doubt myself or my jobs and that I’m doing to much I ask God for a sign or help and he ALWAYS shows me the way!

Everyone’s familiar with the Yellow Pages, but did you know that there’s a website for the Yellow Pages that offers information on local establishments and help finding good deals? Finally, another great review site we know of is Superpages. It’s another awesome place on the web to go for the latest weather and information on shopping and services. Going red is a bold move and an undeniable statement. Celebrities, like Rihanna and Kirsten Dunst, try it at least once in their career, and now it is your turn. Be bold and make the shift to red this fall season. Serge Normant at John Frieda master colorist David John has all the tips for your transition into auburn territory.

Red Will Work on You: Reds can be adjusted to fit almost anyone. Although the color typically works well on people with freckles and cooler skin tones, the red hue can be tailored for everyone. From light to dark shades, cool blue-based reds to warm coppery tones and bright to more subtle tones, you can find a red that will work for you!

Maintain the Color: After the switch, be sure to use a sulfate-free shampoo or one created specifically for colored hair. Reds do tend to fade faster than any other color, so beware. You can also freshen up the color with tinted conditioners like John Frieda’s Color Magnifying Daily Conditioner with Anti-Fading Agents. Another trick is to do a vinegar rinse in the shower to seal the cuticle and lock in the color.

Go For It: Don’t be afraid to go red – there is a way to make it work for you. If you are hesitant to go all-over red, try multiple-tonal red highlights as a start. Red is in this fall, so don’t hesitate. Make the switch and rock the red!
